Message from the President
Summer is right around the corner and the pool will soon open. As always, opening day is the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. So mark your calendars for Saturday May, 27th, at 9:00 am. That first jump in the water is often only for the bold and the young, but it is always fun.
Invoices and Dues are now online
For those that haven’t’ paid their membership dues yet, just a friendly reminder that there are no paper invoices this year. Your dues are available online at www.hollinmeadows.org
Volunteer Day and Social on May 7 from 10AM to 4PM
I hope you can join us for the HMSTC Community Volunteer Day. Help us clean up the pool grounds, enjoy some food and refreshments, and reconnect with friends in the community. Come by for an hour or stay all day, the more hands the better as we move mulch, plant flowers, and hang out with our summer friends. As you know, our club is a volunteer driven organization with almost all the work done by volunteers. Many of us have been working all winter on projects to make the pool and tennis courts the best we can, but we need help to get across the finish line. So bring the family and help make this a fun day.
Welcome New Families
We continue to be a dynamic and growing club. I am excited about the number of new members we have and look forward to meeting all of you soon. For existing members, please introduce yourself, and go out of your way to help make everyone feel welcome.
Still Recruiting New Members
We only have a handful of memberships left before the season begins, so if you have new neighbors or fun friends then please invite them to join.
Our New Website
Most of you are already aware that we have rolled out a new web-based membership interface, known as Member Splash. The new system completely replaces our old paper-driven process for membership information, invoices, and the check-in process at the pool. The new system allows you to manage your own account, update your membership profile, family information, contact information, and order packs of guest passes at a discounted rate. We are also happy to announce the new system will allow members to pay their annual dues and event fees online with a credit card or PayPal account.
Member Splash will make payments easier, allow for faster check-ins for members and guests at the front desk, give you the ability to make changes to your profile, and make signing up for social events and volunteer activities seamless.
Follow HMSTC on Social Media
As part of our ongoing efforts to keep members engaged and up-to-date, HMSTC is on Facebook, Twitter: @HMSwimandTennis, and Instagram: @hmswimandtennis. We will be using our social media platforms to share information on pool happenings, social events and member updates throughout the season. Members can take advantage of HMSTC social media accounts to share photos, updates and more with each other using #HMSTC. In addition, you can always check on the latest newsletters and information at www.hollinmeadows.org
Speaking of activities, enclosed in this newsletter is the draft social calendar for the 2017 season. We start things off with our opening party the week after Memorial Day, our opening BBQ is one of the best all year. To stay up to date all year round, visit the event calendar on our new website: https://hollinmeadows.org/events/
Improvements to the Club
Your board members have been busy all offseason making necessary repairs and updates to the club, some that you can see and others that are less obvious, but here is a short list of the highlights:
- New website and online payment system
- New concrete deck work: We have replaced a large portion of our pool deck by the shallow end to make it safer and have less puddling
- New life guard stands
- New bridge to rear tennis courts
- New tables in the Barracuda Café
- New drink vending machine by the tennis courts
- New tables and chairs in the grassy area by the playground
- Additional screening to our tennis courts
Thank you, and I hope to see you all soon,
Long Range Planning and Capital Campaign Committees
As many of you know, our club, like many others in the Northern Virginia Swim League was originally constructed over 50 years ago. This unique network of neighborhood pools is an unsung jewel of living in this area, and we are proud of the history and community at Hollin Meadows. However, 52 years is an extremely long life for a pool, and despite meticulous maintenance, our physical plant and infrastructure are reaching their end of life. We simply cannot resurface the pool again. Already we have seen several pools in the area either demolish and replace their pools or significantly reconstruct them. To get ahead of the process before we face an emergency, your Board of Directors has elected to create two new member driven committees to investigate, get ideas and feedback from the membership, and ultimately propose alternatives to replace our current pool by the 2027. Based on what other pools in the area have done we know this endeavor is expensive, but if planned correctly should have a minimum impact on our swim season and our dues structure.
Because we see the pool planning and the club financing as two complex issues we have created two committee’s to lead the investigations into each.
The Long Range Planning Committee (LPC) will make recommendations to the board for the replacement of the pool and for other purposes, including familiarizing itself with the relevant state and county codes, processes and regulations required to meet all standards necessary to obtain a permit to build a new pool to replace the current facility. In addition, the LPC will establish a system of membership hearings, surveys and open houses to receive membership suggestions and ideas to be the basis for any recommendations they may put forward. This will be a multi-year process.
Capital Campaign Committee (CCC) will identify funding alternatives and plans to finance the eventual replacement of our current pool in close interaction with the Long Range Planning Committee. The committee will familiarize itself with the methods other clubs in and around our area have used to finance large capital construction projects, and establish a system of membership hearings, surveys and open houses to receive membership suggestions and ideas to be the basis for any recommendations they may put forward. We assumes the pool will need to be replaced in its entirety by 2027 with a construction budget for the replacement of the pool in excess of $1,000,000.
Committee Membership: We are seeking members who have particular skills in these areas to be key members of these committees. So if you are an architect, engineer, planner, environmental designer or have a finance or fundraising background then please contact Brian Wild at firstname.lastname@example.org about potentially participating in either of these two committees.
The 2017 season is off to a great start! So far this season, we’ve officially added 26 new families to our roster and are finalizing many more. HMSTC would like to welcome each of you and thank you for becoming part of the Club!

A BIG thank you to each of you for embracing our new payment system and means of communication. Our new system, Member Splash allows us to take CC as well as communicate much more efficiently with you. We had a few had hurdles along the way but with your patience we worked through it and look forward to things being even easier next year.
HMSTC Emails in Junk Mail
Our current struggle continues to be many of our emails ending up in junk mail. We are working to fix that but in the meantime, please be diligent about checking junk folders for our emails as well as following us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and the Website. Everything you need to know will always be posted there.
For summer of 2017, we will sell guest credits online. You will need to purchase guest credits before you arrive to the pool. No money can be accepted at the pool. Guest credits will immediately be added to your account and available for use when you bring a guest to the front desk. You can purchase guest credits at any time by logging into your HMSTC account on our website. The daily guest fee is $5 each or $20 for a pack of 5. An adult member of the sponsoring household must accompany and authorize the guest’s use of the facility and to agree to pay the associated fee.
May 21st Waitlist Offers
If you plan to be an active member in 2017, please makes sure all dues and late fees are paid no later than May 21st. We have many families interested in joining and should we have a waitlist, we will begin offering unpaid memberships on May 22nd. You can access your account at www.hollinmeadows.org and use the instructions you received through email. If you need assistance, I am happy to help.
We look forward to another exciting summer at the pool. Whether you like to relax, exercise, compete, chat with neighbors, or just cool off, opening day is just around the corner! Information is provided below to help you plan your summer. If at any time you have questions or concerns about the operation of the pool, please contact us. Thank you.

An adult member must accompany and sign in any guests that come to the pool. Your cooperation is appreciated.
2017 Pool Hours
While Fairfax County Schools are in session, May 27 – June 22:
Weekdays (M-F): 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Weekends & Holidays: 9:00 am – 9:00 pm
Summertime! June 23 –Sept. 4:
Weekdays (M-F):12:00 noon – 9:00 pm
Weekends & Holidays: 9:00 am – 9:00 pm
Week after Labor Day, Sept. 5 – Sept. 10
Weekdays (T-F): 3:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Weekends (Sat-Sun): 9:00 am – 8:00 pm
There is a mandatory 10-minute rest-break each hour on the hour for everyone under 16 years of age. Except for the weekdays while public schools are still in session, the pool is reserved for Adult Swim (16 years and older) from 3:00 to 3:30 each afternoon. All those under 16 must vacate the pool for that 30 minute period. Be aware that our swim team practices 4:30- 7:00 pm in the lap lane area, but other areas of the pool are open to the general membership. Please be aware that the pool is closed for general swimming during home swim meets (see dates on the Swim Team schedule) until 12:00 noon on Saturdays and after 5:00 pm on Mondays, and closes early for the Adult Party on one Saturday in July.
Members may hold their child’s Birthday Party at the pool on weekdays if requested and approved in advance. Weekend or Holiday birthday parties are not allowed. Send requests at least a week in advance via e-mail to email@example.com for our calendar review prior to sending out your invitations. Other events (sports parties, office parties, school events, daycare groups, etc.) are not permitted.
Group swim lessons will be offered for children with our Swim Team Coaches as instructors. The program will focus on teaching children to be comfortable and safe in the water and to learn basic swimming skills. The children will be grouped by ability – Newbie (new to the water and have not taken lessons, generally 3 to 5 year olds), Beginners (confident in the water but have not taken lessons or are not proficient in freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke), and Advanced Beginners (confident in the water and knows freestyle and backstroke basics but technique needs improvement). Classes are organized into groups of 4 to 8 children. The student to instructor ratio will be 4 to 1.
Each session will be offered from 11:30 AM to 12:00 NOON, and will consist of 8 half-hour classes taught Monday through Thursday over two weeks, with Fridays reserved as make-up days only if a class is canceled due to weather. Since children may be easily distracted, parents and siblings are asked refrain from being in the immediate vicinity of the classes.
Session dates will be announced closer to opening day.
Registration forms and more information are available at the Guard Desk and on the Club website. The cost per student per session is $65. Payment (by check to HMSTC) must be made prior to the start of a session.
If you have any questions about the program, please email Carrie O’Hara at
Private Swim Lessons are also available from our Swim Team Coaches and Lifeguards. The program offers focused one-on-one instruction, and parent choice of instructor. The Club will post a list of instructors’ names to help parents identify and select the instructor of their choice. Parents will make arrangements and payments directly with the instructor. Costs vary depending on the credentials and experience of the instructor. Private lessons may be scheduled between 11:30 am and 12:00 noon on weekdays between June 22 and July 30, if the selected instructor is not teaching group lessons, but you must make arrangements with the selected instructor in advance. Parents can schedule private lessons for any other time as well, but to avoid crowded conditions and distractions it is best not to schedule lessons when the pool is very busy (3:30-6:30 daily). Evenings (6:30-8:00/9:00) are typically very quiet, as are weekend mornings when there is not a home swim meet. The Private Lessons can be scheduled through the September closing of the pool. Note: Swim Team Coaches and Lifeguards are not permitted to give lessons when they are working with the swim team or are on duty. As always, lessons conducted for fee may only be conducted by our Coaching and Lifeguard staff. Any other lessons for fee are prohibited at our pool.
Tennis Chair Needed for HMSTC Board
The HMSTC Board is currently looking for a member to fill our Tennis Chair position. Our tennis program has a rich history and is vital component of our club and our community. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Brian Wild as soon as possible. As we head into opening day, it is critical that we identify a member to take on this leadership position and help continue to grow and improve our tennis program. We are planning to continue to offer activities throughout the season so that all club members, both young and old and inexperienced and experienced, can pick up a racquet and join in the fun. Check the website or the bulletin board by the front courts on your way into the pool for tennis news and updates. Additional information, including details about clinics, team sign-ups and round robins will be sent in a separate email closer to opening day.
We would also like to remind everyone to please sign in your tennis guests at the front desk prior to using the courts. The courts can be used between the hours of 9AM and 9PM and the gate is unlocked when the pool is open. If you would like a key to access the courts in the off-season, please let us know – all we ask is that you please make sure to lock the gate to the courts when leaving.
Please remind your children that the courts are for tennis ONLY and tennis shoes or sneakers are required.
2017 Social Events Calendar
We are looking forward to another fun filled summer season. Below you will see many events that we have planned. We are still planning many more so please look for updates. As a reminder, all children under the age of 16 are required to have a parent or responsible adult present at all HMSTC social events.

New swimmers only need to attend one try-out.
Parent Requirements: The HM Swim Team is run entirely by volunteers. Parents are expected to help at meets when their child is swimming. There are no paid referees or umpires, the parents get all the training and do all the work. You will sign-up online for each meet and can choose a job that best suits your strengths and needs. If you have a child swimming in the meet, be prepared to volunteer. For a list of jobs and details about each one, see the Team Handbook 2017 in the Documents section on our website. The NVSL offers training for parents who want to be a Stroke & Turn Judge, Starter or Referee. NVSL University is on June 3rd. Sponsors Wanted! We are looking to our friendly neighborhood businesses, friends, families and community members to help with yearly team expenses and activities. If you are unable to attend either of these days you will need to go to Sport Fair in Arlington to try-on, purchase and have our HM logo applied to the suit(s).
We have some great things planned for this season starting off with a Welcome Back and Welcome New Swimmers Potluck on June 9th at the pool.
